paris eats

what we did
in paris,
i say
e a t.

from
green tea eclairs
at
AOKI...



to
a croissant
from
a different
bakery
each
breakfast
(we had to compare
them all, right?)...



to bread
(and more
croissants)
from the
famous
gosselin
(winner of
best baguette
in paris)...

we ate
our way
through
paris.

a little corbusier

you can't
really go
to paris
with
an architect
and not
see some
corbusier.
i think that
they'd take
away grub's
architecture
degree or something.



there are
a few corbusiers
you can visit
but we
chose
to visit
maison la roche
in the neighborhood
of auteuil.



dare i admit
that
grub isn't
the biggest
corbusier fan?



one thing
we both
noticed
was that
although
it was
recently
restored,
it doesn't age well.
this is strange
when you
are surrounded
by buildings
in paris
that are
hundreds of years older...



i think
that
this may be
due to the fact
that
he
was trying
to build
a completely
new way...
it takes
a while
for the artisans
to figure out how
to do it right.

hell,
almost
all of
frank lloyd wright's
buildings
leaked.



i was fascinated
by the tiny little
color bars
(above photo)
on each wall
to show you
how he achieved
the color
for the walls.

grub and
i have a little
architecture
curse on us.
every time we
go to a famous
architecture
building
my digital camera dies.
well,
it happened again.
so
although it
was horrible
lighting,
i took
some polaroids.

le sigh.

doors of montmartre

i am
certainly
not
the first
to be charmed
by the doors
of paris.
with their
bold colors
and
elaborate
knockers & knobs,
it's not
hard to
see
why
they are
so photogenic.

it was
an overcast
wednesday afternoon
when
we wandered
around montmartre.
i was
looking for
a pétanque park
that i wanted
to show grub.
a few years
back i sat
by that park
with my mom
and watched
old men
play pétanque
for hours.



as
we walked,
i took
a few polaroids
of doors.
i am partial
to blue ones.
my favorite
(top photo)
was right
by
au lapin agile,
a famous
old cabaret.

these doors
often lead
into courtyards
that offer
refuge
from
the busy street.



as
we saw
people
enter
and leave,
we loved
peeking
in
to
a whole
other
private
world.

a paris breakfast

i am not
a breakfast person.
i usually just
get a cup
or two
of tea
down
before
i rush out
the door
(usually late).
but
i could
get use
to breakfast
in paris.

our friends
(the same ones
who have
a place
in sea ranch)
own an apartment
on île saint-louis.
they have
a perfect
little table
by the window
that looks
out onto
a courtyard.
the softness
of the light
on the table
is magical.

grub would
go out early
to get
croissants
and
a pain au chocolat
and
we'd sit
by the window
with a pot
of
mariage frères tea
and take
the morning in.
slowly.

perfect.

off to paris

it's hard
to believe
that
i am off
to paris.
i feel like
i just got
back from texas.
i am swamped
with work
but
this our
final vacation
before
the big push
to finish
my dissertation.

.

funny,
no matter
how hard
i try
to include
everything
on my planner,
i always forget
something.
some day
i will
get it
just
right.
i penciled
in the outfits
because
it's weather
and
excursion
dependent...
grub's in
charge
of the agenda.
i just know
there's
lots of
crepe-eating
on the agenda.

in 2007
with my mother.
while
i am there,
march 19th,
my mother
will turn 75.
paris will
always remind me
of her.
wish she
could come
with us.
