all about green

scarf from martha
{uniform studio}

first,
thank you
for all
your wonderful
words of
congratulations.
it means
the world to me.
really.

. . . . .

when she
gave me
this scarf,
martha said
she was worried
that
i didn't like
green
(i showed up
wearing
all gray).

little did
she know
it's my
absolute
favorite.

and her
green
is really
the
perfect green.

i feel
that this
piece
is
a wonderful
representation
of how
her architecture
and art
come together.
the structure
of this piece
is brilliant
but it is also
a soft, beautiful
item to wear
(and practical,
you can throw
it in the dryer!)
although i think
i could just
stare at it
on the wall.

. . . . .

i met-up
with
martha
and
emily
for dinner
last night.

it's
amazing
to meet
blog chums.
something
about getting
to know
a person
through
this strange
medium
of the
internet...
and then
meeting
them in person.
it still
takes me
a little
getting use to...
like going
on a blind date.

martha brought
her friend
cynthia
(who,
like martha,
is
also a
searchlight artist).
it was so
inspiring to
talk to them...
especially
to talk
about
their
experience
with
being involved
with
the craft council
and how
to "market"
your work.
something
that is still
a mystery to me.

time felt
so short...
so much
i would have
liked to ask...
but soon
it was over
and i had
a train
back to dc
to catch!

martha & emily

i snapped
only 2
poor photos.
emily
took much nicer
photos
(check out
lunar eclipse
photos)!

thank you
emily,
martha,
and
cynthia
for such
a wonderful
evening!

uniform studio cuff
{a cuff from martha}

i hope all
of you
have
a great
weekend.
it's the first
weekend
i have gotten
in a long while!
i plan to
do some baking
(the proper
cooking
for a scientist,
no?).

and we're voting

the facts
i always
wear
this deathcab tee
on voting day.

one great thing
about living in dc
is that
people are
really into politics-
in a good way
(usually).
most of the time,
most of the country
doesn't seem
to care
too much
about what
goes on
in the government.
but the capital
is full
of politicians,
lawyers,
NGOers,
and students.
people watch
debates
and elections
at all the bars
like sports.

it's pretty great.
we should care
a lot more.

i am glad
this primary
is getting
so much
attention.
people
are voting.

happy
super tuesday
to those
who get to
vote today!

. . . .

a little while
ago i saw
this amazing photo
by the lovely hanne
{she takes
stunning photos}
it's from
the noa noa catalog.

noa noa inspiration

so inspiring
(to others too)...
they are
not easy
to find in the us
but
by the sweet hanne
mailed me one

noa noa inspiration

noa noa inspiration

and included
a book
and
this wonderful piece!
thank you
so much
hanne!

. . .

i also
received
this book

crochet inspiration

from
my dear
friend
annemarie
in the mail.
she knew
i was
coveting it.
i want
to make
this so badly:

crochet puppets!

i need to get
better
at crochet!
many
xoxox
to annemarie
(miss you)!

what's
inspiring
you
this week?

simply soup

simply soup

jen
is the master of
food shots.
she never
ceases
to amaze me.

here is my
attempt
at
a simply photo-esque
lunch
shot.

grub made me
molly's
purée of celery root soup.
the soup is
lovely
but even
more wonderful
is that grub
made it for me
because i
was obsessed
with trying it
but didn't
have time
to make it...
so sweet.

it's raining
outside
and
a perfect
day to stay in
and have soup
(and tea & cookies).

happy tuesday.

buttons & heath

today
i am off
to seattle...
i am so excited
to see
my family,
old pals
and
i get to see
ash
too.
she is moving
away from seattle
and this makes
me sad
because it
was a highlight
of my
trips
home to see her.
but now
i can visit her
in a new place.

as
lisa s
mentioned,
we did not just
work on my
visit to sf.
we went to 2
places
i have been
wanting to go to
since
i heard about them...
the famous
{and secret}
button store
and
the
heath factory.
2 things
for which
i have,
as amy put it,
an unnatural love.

. . . . .

i have
a button lady
here in dc
who is wonderful
and i love
getting buttons
and chatting
with her
but
this
was button mecca.
i was overwhelmed.
i bought
many buttons
(but not as many
as i wanted)
and
i fear that
i barely
scraped the surface
of what she had.
she was a lovely
old lady
and i loved
listening
to her chat
with lisa
as i looked through
the drawers....

i didn't know
that
there was
a heath factory store.
i learned about
heath
when grub
and i started dating.
he had some old
heath from his aunt
and i was quite
smitten with it.

i bought
just a few items
as presents
(so i can't show them)
but here's
some of
my bowl/button booty.

not as well
coordinated
as
lisa's buttons.

. . . . .

before i go,
here's one more
skirt
i finished
sewing tanks on...
this is my 2nd favorite
(but i have
a soft spot
for yellow).

i hope that you
all have
a wonderful
holiday...
i may occasionally post
if i can
but otherwise
i am back on the 30th.

happy
happy
holidays
to all of you.

tank girls

{lisa's guest room}

not really sure
where december
went...
can't believe it's
been so long
since i posted.
sorry.

much has
happened
in the interim.

first,
flew
to san diego
for a meeting.
met some
hot shot
caterpillar people
(but i was too shy)
gave a talk
(it went fine)

then,
i flew
to san francisco
to
hang out with
lisa s
and meet up
with
lisa c
& diana
(i guess that
that night
diana and i
were
the cult jam).

lisa c and i
thrift-shopped
and
she took me
to all
the most stylish
stores in town,
including
rare device.
they have
a fascinating
show there
this month
by
kate bingaman-burt.
she offers
so much
to refect upon.

we had
a tasty
pasta dinner
at farina
and then
met up with
diana fayt.
i adore her work
and she is
just as complex,
intricate,
and
beautiful
as her art.

it was
wonderful
to here
about the transitions
in lisa c's life.
i am so excited
for her
and what
she has ahead.
she is amazing
in that
she is so
open to what
is before her
and
her creativity
and energy
are infectious.
she is
headed
for something
big
and the
evolution
will be
fantastic
to watch.

.. .. .. .. ..

i spent
a lot of time
with lisa s.
which
is always
wonderful.
she was
very busy,
so we spent
most of the time
just hanging out
and
grading
and
working
on projects.

{lisa's kitty mcnulty}

sometimes
that is
the best quality time
with friends.
it's nice
to just
get things
done
together.

she graded, i graded...
she sorted papers, i knitted...
she sewed, i sewed...
she graded, i sewed....

{lisa working
on new pieces
for this show}

we
had to have
some
tiki drinks
(grub's current obsession):

and
we collaborated
on a
felt tank project.
here are
a few
skirts
we made
(i love her
sewing machine):

vintage skirts
with tanks
from
her installations
(which have been
featured in
art in america-
congrats to
lisa!).

there will be
more skirts
and purses
to come.

it was
so quickly
over
and
here i am
back in dc.

a few days
home,
then back
to the
west coast
for the holidays.

hope you
all are well...

more
before i leave.
until then,
xo

Quercus alba

{wednesday's purse}

i work
on trees.
well,
on caterpillars
that eat trees
but
at least
indirectly
i study trees
too.

by far
my favorite
tree
is the white oak,
Quercus alba.

i love
the smell
and shape
of the leaves
and
the caterpillars
that nestle
in their leaves.

when
i was trying
to come up
with
a decoration
for this purse
for a
blog friend,
i couldn't
decide on one
that would
suit her.
i knew that
it would
be
plant-affiliated
but what...
and then
i thought
of the
gentle and noble
oak.
perfect.

i hope
she likes it.

meanwhile
bowls
are
being
felted
for
my etsy shop
update
next friday.

polaroid update

{sunday}

some
polaroids
for you...

first,
today's

for
shash's
feet week

and
the farmer's
market
this week:

and some
random
corners of my home:

also
this
beautiful
pola
from eshu:

her new
purse..
i just
love
the pola
{and all
her polas}
thanks liz!!!

more of
liz's polas
here.

more
of the
polaroid.a.day
project
here.

. . . . .

more to
come
friday...
hope you
are all
having
a wonderful
week.

off it flew

to
a show
at
LittleBird gallery
in LA.

a show
called
off they flew
to benefit
(for restoration of)
the griffith park
bird santuary
that was
damaged by fire.
here.

i am honored
to be showing
alongside
lisa,
wendy,
and
many others.

if you live there,
go see the show.
100 birds
for
$100 each.

it's probably
good that
i can't go...
i'd buy
so many birds
including
this one.

my piece is
called
germination...
fire often
brings about
the germination
of
many plants
that lay
dormant
until scorched
by fire.
the germination
of a piece,
of a show,
of a sanctuary.

in
the left corner
is an old
perscription
vial
with seeds
from
a
fire-adapted
plant.
too literal?
maybe,
but
it was the
germination
of the piece.

have a lovely
weekend.

next week,
polaroids
and
a
purse-a-day.

saved by...

the fedex girl.

let me explain.

i have mentioned
that i was working
on two collaborative
pieces with eero
for
the synthesis show
in anchorage.

this entails
me doing
the first
half of
each piece
then mailing
them to eero
to finish.

after
a series
of
unfortunate events
that included
spraining
some fingers
and
completely
scraping across
one of the pieces
while packaging
it for shipping...
i finally finished
and
shipped out
the pieces
this morning.
when i got
to the fedex place
the fedex girl said
it would cost
$200
to ship it.
my heart sank.
i thought
i would just sit
down and cry.
she must have
seen it
on my face
because then
she whispered,
"i'll give you
my discount."
it ended up
costing $45.
i wanted
to jump
over the counter
and hug her.
thank you
so so much
fedex girl.
you saved me.

i am not sure
how i feel
about the pieces...
there was
a lot
of thought
behind them...
layers
of biological
evidence.

but
i wasn't happy
with the
execution...
eero
will finish them
this week...
although
i haven't
given her
much time,
she does
have
a golden touch.

. . . . .

now for work
on my bird
for
off they flew.
more later
this week.

thanks
for all your
sweet
comments
this past week.
