i was thinking
on my way home
yesterday evening
that
my route home
is now so familiar
after living here
for well over
a year...
but
it seems that
no matter
how long
i live here
and
no matter
how well
i speak french
i will always
feel like an outsider.
for this reason
i do not believe
that i can ever
truly
call this place
my home.

Crucial to understand. Isn't it amazing how some places call out to us and welcome us, and others, no matter how pleasant, still remain a stranger? I'm currently feeling strangely at home in Vermont...
I've lived in Germany for just shy of three years now and have spoken the language fluently for longer than that and I feel the same way. Even though it's lovely, not quite home.
