thirty days of photos & the guerilla girls

yet another challenge.
i am participating in a 30 days of photos challenge.
my goal is to try to take photos outside
my recent picture-taking environment.
which lately has been in my apartment or lab.
there are a lot of things that
i have been meaning to take pictures of
and never get around to it.
this will be an incentive.

sometimes i look at the most visually boring space
and try to imagine how one could take a good picture of it.
some people have a real knack for it.
please feel free to look at and comment on
my daily photos here.

i recently discovered a new food blog, nordljus,
with phenomenal food pictures.
i am not sure if keiko, is a professional photographer
but she takes beautiful pictures!
i have recently been interested in food photography
because grub just finished
the first "dining by design"
modern restaurant book
and had trouble dealing with the food photographers.
the next restaurant book is in the works
and we have been talking about flying to
at least some of the restaurants
so that i can take the food shots
(and we can eat free food at beautiful restaurants).
food photography is not an easy craft by any means.
so i am trying to get a feel for it.
i think that i could take professional quality photos
given enough research and practice…
we shall see.

i was unable to write an entry last night because
i went to see the guerilla girls!
right here on campus!
both frida kahlo (!!!) and rosalind franklin were there.

if you are not familiar with the guerilla girls
read about them here!
as far as i am concerned they are
one of the most inspiring feminist activists groups
since the word feminism became a bad word.
was it ever considered a good word?
last time i saw them was
at the march for women’s lives
i was a little disappointed by their lecture
partially due to technical difficulties
and the sea of annoying undergrads
who were offered extra credit to go to the lecture.
many of them decided to contribute
a running commentary for my benefit.
i was pleased to see some of my students
staying afterwards for autographs,
i.e. not there for extra credit.
i am not one for autographs
but even i got in line to get their signatures in my book.
i make a special exception for the guerilla girls.

Yahoo did this thang in which you can have alternate names that link to yer e-mail....thus i am finally able to have the email address i wanted, because you can now use "THE DOT" in yer address.....hence:
"brilliant.light"...world domination shall be mine.....(I HAVE BEEN WATCHING TOO MUCH "FAMILY GUY")

i have to tell you that your site blows me away....you are rapidly eclipsing all other sources of inspiration.....shit girl...I don't know how you do it but it is impressive....and all those websites to check out...I shall think of you as the little pilot fish that swims close to the shark and keeps him clean...or in my case whispers in his ear regarding the current hip web spots to check out....

by the way.... there is a photo under the heading "FINDS FOR FEB.24"..."3. brown belt"...I must have this belt...whatever i have to do....(AS LONG AS IT'S IN MY SIZE...).

MORE LATER.....MUST GO SHAVE FOR SHRINKY-DINK SHOW....I'LL TRY TO TAKE PHOTOS...

LATER I AM GOING TO TRY AND GET TO TOWN HALL FOR THE SHOWDOWN BETWEEN RON SIMMS(A LOCAL BLACK POLITICIAN), AND FRED HUTCHERSEN(A BLACK PASTOR WHO IS AGAINST GAY MARRIAGE)...I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THE CARNAGE....

OTHER ITEMS OF NOTE:

I NEED TO GET YOU TO TUTOR ME IN HOW TO MAKE JPEG FILES OF DIGITAL PHOTOS ETC., AND HOW TO SEND THEM IN E-MAILS.
ALSO I WOULD LIKE TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT GETTING AHOLD OF A GOOD MANUEL CAMERA, SO I CAN TAKE COOL PHOTOS THAT DON'T INVOLVE DISPOSABLE CAMERAS, THAT CAN'T TAKE PHOTOS WITH THE DESIRED LIGHT/LENGTH OF EXPOSURE, AND POSSIBLLY SOME INFO ON TAKING PICTURES, SINCE YOU HAve that all down....

MORE LATER.....

Hey girly,

I didn't know that the Guerilla girls went on tour, it's awesome that you got to see them. Did they mainly speak about women's underrepresentation in the art world or were they mroe specific?
