self portrait tuesday: on wednesday

self portrait tuesday on wednesday
appropriate for this week because
i seem to be running a day behind
on everything!
tuesdays are very busy for me...
there was a lot of
desperate scrambling
to get things done.
scrambling - heh!
a particularly funny verb to use
since i have been making egg cozies!

this is my last entry for
the march challenge - time.

for this self portrait tuesday
we will take a look into my closet:

i was at a loss for ideas
this week and grub said
why don’t you do tee-shirts?
we all have old tee-shirts
dating back years and years
in our closets.

after i thought about it…
i decided it was a damn good idea
(usually that’s how it works
with grub’s ideas).
each one of the tee-shirts that
i have been hanging onto
has a story…
that is why it’s perfect for
self portrait about time.
here are a selection of
my tee-shirts dating back
over 10 years:

now that you have gotten a view
of my chest from every angle,
let me explain...
left to right then top to bottom

property of alcatraz
circa 1994
got it at a show for cipher and the snow
when i was in undergrad in washington state.
horrible music but they were
a group of beautiful lipstick lesbians…
how could i resist.
their unicorn logo was silkscreened
to the back of used tees…
you could get them to put
a diamond on the unicorn.
the girl in the band
who was bedazzling the shirts
was the cutest one…
so i had to get a tee
and get it bedazzled.
she said i was cute.
i had a big crush on her.
you can’t even see the unicorn anymore
but the sparkly diamond is still there:

i’m the toothfairy
circa 1995
bizarre weirdly sewn shirt
(note weird slash between boobs)
with cute logo.
i never wear it because
it shows my belly
but i heart this shirt!
can’t figure out what to do with it

curl up with a hairdresser
circa 1997
got this shortly after my brother
came out of the closet
to my siblings and i.
thought i would give it to him!
bought it at my favorite vintage store
in pullman, washington.

glacier, montana
circa 1999
graduated from college
and was back in seattle.
this is the only tee that
i remember buying in seattle
during this period.
bought it at a vintage store
called atlas clothing.
i almost moved to Montana in 2003.

the prom
circa 2001
got it at the prom show
at cat’s cradle in carborro, nc.
my friend was visiting me
from seattle.
she briefly dated
the lead guy the bassist.
he was a big pompous jerk
(big surprise- he’s a rock star)
so she got a free one
(because he felt guilty
for being such a jerk to her?)
but i had to pay for mine.
i had to have it because
i am obsessed with
vintage typewriters.

i love my gay brother
circa 2002
my brother had just
told my parents he way gay
before visiting me in NC.
my housemates
and i all made tees to wear
when we picked him up
at the airport.
each tee we made
had different phrases:
i heart gwen’s gay brother
i almost married gwen’s gay brother.
i slept with gwen’s gay brother.

or my favorite,
ask me about gwen’s gay brother.
we made him one that read:
i am gwen’s gay brother.
by brother was so jet-lagged
he didn’t notice our shirts right away.
that day everywhere we went
everyone did ask about gwen’s gay brother.

42nd street
circa 2002
f.pea gave this to me
when she was going through her big break-up.
i am sentimental,
what can i say.
and i heart f.pea.
she said it was
from a street in charlottesville
i think
.
she got it at
the PTA thriftstore
in carrboro, NC.
she looks better in red
than i do.

stitch-n-bitch
circa 2003
f.pea and i
made this with her gocco printer
(i have been lusting after it ever since)
we hade a great plan of selling them
for some scheme or another…
we were very scheme-y in those days.

grumpy girl
circa 2004
tee from one of my favorite poster art groups,
here the patent pending

the white stripes
circa 2005
with the shins.
how could i miss that.
they played at a weird outdoor venue in maryland.
we drank beer in the parking lot
i felt like i was in high school.

hope you enjoyed my tee-shirt through time!
i’d love to see your old tees
and hear funny stories
about those tees
that you can't bring yourself
to throw out.
email me if you post them:
bugheart (at) gmail (dot) com

in other news…
i am almost done with my egg cozies for
the egg cozy swap.
here is the cozy drying in my office-
i have the tape dispenser on the ears
to flatten them- heh:

i found out that these roll-ons that
i bought in amsterdam are perfect
for shaping cozies:

i need to get annemarie
to send me more!

here is the bunny post-felting:

it’s my first bunny
and the bits need to be trimmed
and it needs a tail, button eyes,
a nose, etc...
oh, and the ears are different sizes
but it’s my first bunny, be kind!
i have a revised bunny
ready for felting
plus a bee and 2 moths.
more to come!
have a great day-
it is SO spring here in DC!

hi. a minor correction for the prom t-shirt story: i was *not* dating the lead singer. i went on a date or two with the bassist. and yes, he was kind of a pompous ass (but to be fair, our first date included you and michael -- not an easy audience).

and the rest of the details are fuzzy. did i get that shirt for free? i dunno. i think i got the cd for free and from someone else, but whatever. we'll go with your version.

also, top-shelf boobies, gwennie.

kisses,
suz

I had to laugh at your closet shot-my shirts are color-coordinated in my closet, too!

thank GAWD you didn't move to montana. i'm pretty sure that 42nd street t-shirt came from the PTA thrift shop in carrboro - there was some special reason i bought it, which evades me now. it was red.

i'm with suz on the boobs comment, by the way. nice bunny.
