german light

in early
july
we were
in
northern germany
for
my cousin's wedding.

i rarely
get a moment
to wander
with my
camera
anymore...

but one
lazy afternoon
while
vee
slept,
i wandered
around in
my uncle's garden.

he was
a beekeeper
and the
garden had
artifacts
from his years
of bee work.







there
were moments
of incredible
light
during
this trip.



i tried
to steal
a few
to save.

{my new mexico planner}

has it really
been so long
since i last
was
in this space?

what a
crazy summer
it has been.
still is.

i was able
to take
a break
to go to
the
ecological society
meetings
in albuquerque...
then
i went
to santa fe
with
my mother
and aunt.

o'keeffe on arriving
in new mexico
said:

Well! Well! Well!...
This is wonderful.
No one told me it was like this!

that's exactly
how i felt.
i fell in love.

maybe because
i have been
in the east
for so
long and
new mexico
is such
a contrast...

maybe it's
the native
desert-loving
californian
in me...

but
i was in awe.









but mostly
i was
in love with
the light.
i couldn't
get over
the light.

once again
o'keeffe
uses
the perfect
words:

It is not a country of
light on things.
It is a country of
things in light.











at the
santa fe opera
i watched
don giovanni
as the
sun set...
and
slowly
a few
desert moths
were drawn
to the lights
on the stage...

how that light
is
irresistible.
stunning.
disorienting.

i felt
the same
way.
