Cote d'Azur: by the sea

grub and i
spent
the last week
in
côte d'azur.
not a place
i ever
expected
to go
but
there i was.

i have
mixed feelings
about the place...
the ocean
is so beautiful
and the little
old town of antibes
is charming
with its
winding little
streets
and castle
by the sea...
but
by day
the beaches
are packed
with people
and lined
with ugly
restaurants
and hotels

that swallow up
the sand.
the shops
and tourists
overwhelm
you until
you are dizzy
with sun
and noise...
but
then
the
sun
begins
to set
and
old men
play boules,
the candy vendors
linger,
and the beach chairs
now empty
sit in silent
attention
towards the sea
and you
can't help
but
fall
in love
a little.

i get that feeling in so many seaside towns. and the golden light of late day makes everyplace so much more beautiful.

I know what you mean but I always end up missing those places the most: those idylls that make you fall in love in spite of the fact that everyone else has loved them before you.

i'm crushing on the place just because of your lovely photos (thanks for not taking any pics of the ugly restaurants--but i guess grub must've prohibited that). i want to go there and sit and sit and sit and stare at the sea without saying a word.

hope the conference went well.... xoxo
