plight of the honey bee

pola: bees

thursday
was my
first
full
day working
in
the bee yard.

i love
that
it's called
a "bee yard."
it
amuses me.

bee yard

i am working
on study
examining
sub-lethal
effects
of pesticides
(imidacloprid)
on honey bees.
it's one
of the potential
contributors
to
colony collapse disorder.

bees are
wonderful
in so many
ways.
i am
even saying
this as
my index
fingers
are still
swollen
from
stings
in my fingers.

up close

i love

...the hum
that
they make
after you open
the hive
and smoke
them.
letting you
know
that
you better
quit
with the
smoke.

...when
they stick
their heads
super
far into
the comb.
all you
see is
their
butts
sticking
out.

...their
fuzzy bodies
move like
one beast
across
a frame
of honey.

i hope
if you
get a chance
you watch one
this summer.
you can
even see
pollen on their fuzzy legs.

if you can,
plant a bee garden.
they really
could use all
the help
that
they can get.

. . . . .

i was
a may guest
on
habit.
only
a few more days
to go...
i am sad
to leave
but
i am excited
about
the new guests
for june.

enjoy
the weekend.

poor D gets stung by bees a lot. otherwise i might be able to convince him that we should have a little hive.....

i'm going to go read more about that pesticide. maybe i should do a doily toxin of it!

we are loving our hive. so many beekeepers in our area. i'm hoping they make enough honey to survive the long winter. xo

oh i love honey bees. and their fuzzy little bodies and pollen coated legs.

i have a salsa garden growing on my balcony and a bee garden is in the works. i wish i had a whole yard to use rather than a little 4'x8' space, but it will do.

I want to know what it's like to have a close encounter with bees too!

i am jealous that you get to hang out with bees all day. as a kid i used to love to watch and pet bees. i was amazed that they would let you stroke their fuzzy little bodies and not sting. pesticides suck.

My dad used to be a bee keeper so I've been around bees most my life, they are wonderful creatures aren't they even if they do sting sometimes! We actually lived in the end of a honey shed for a while. Can you imagine the constant hum of bees and the sweet smell of honey.

I love seeing the pollen on their legs, it is amazing how many different colors it can be. The first time I looked at a hive this spring I saw bright red and bright orange- had they been landing on doritos????

Oh wow, this is awesome. I just found your journal and I really love this post. I would like to keep bees, and I think the city where I live actually offers an incentive to do so. That and composting, which I should be better at. :)

when i was young we had a bee hive in the middle of an old sapodilla tree just above my garden. Smoky would come every summer to harvest the honey and give my mother a bottle or two. Like you i love bees, their color, motions and even stings. I have been stung quite a few in my childhood and always bawled when they died even though i was swollen.
