learning about food

may17: cilantro

i don't truly
feel
that
the warmth
of spring
has arrived
until
the
farmer's market
opens.

i know that
sounds
very
urban,
green,
yuppie
of me
but
it's true.

may17: radishes

everyone
teaches you
something...

grub taught
me to really
love food.
we talk about
food
a lot.
when
i sit down
to knit
or work
on a new
collage,
grub
cooks
while
watching
old episodes
of bad tv
on the web.

may17: asparagus

he experiments,
i wait
and
then
i try
the new dish.
we never eat
before
9 or 10...
but i am fine
with it
(i have long since
learned to snack
on cheese while
i wait)
because
i love
being part
of the process.

may17: bfast

although
i am
the ecologist,
it was
grub
that decided
that
we should
completely
move
to eating local.
so he got up
early
on the weekends
and went to
the farmer's market.

may18: poppies

soon
i started
to go with him
to take
polas
and look
at plants
(i am the gardener).
soon
farmers learned
i was
an entomologist
so
i had fun
talking to
them
about their bugs.

may18: lettuce

i use to
work on
organic farms
studying
the
cabbage white butterfly,
but now
that
i have moved
on to
forest moths.
i don't
get to run
around
on farms
everyday.
i miss those days.

may18: onions

last week
we went to
both the
saturday
and
sunday market
together.
the saturday one
is small
and across
the street
from our
apartment...
but sundays
is the big one
in dupont circle
and you
have to fight
the crowds.

may18: shrooms

so i usually
prefer
saturday
and let grub
get up early
on sunday
while
i hang out
in bed
with spot.

may18: strawberries

Ah, you're lucky! Our farmer's market is 12 miles away. I'm growing a really big garden this year, however. Can't wait to start harvesting...

I am glad someone else has to wait ages for their food I feed the little ones early then when they are in bed we listen to music in the kitchen while I potter in and out of the garden then eat by candlelight outside- lovely on mellow summer evenings.....

I enjoyed your post... the poetic words, the lovely pictures... Ah!
I too am into eating local, fresh, organic. I crave it!
I am 7.5 months pregnant and when people ask me if I am having any weird cravings I tell them "not really, unless you consider the fact that I crave local, fresh, organic foods!" I get so happy every time I talk about it.
