city mouse

on the farm

i get the
reputation
of being
a city girl.

i did,
after all,
grow up in
LA
and
i live in DC.

i always
find it
a little
amusing
since
i spend
more time
than the
average girl
in the
"country"
usually
up
in a tree
in
a national forest.

last week
our friends
from
the farmers market
invited us
to their farm
for the monthly
farmers potluck.

so
we rented
a zip car
like good
city mice
and took
a half day
and
headed
to
their farm
by
harpers ferry.

attila
showed us
around
the farm
before
the potluck

garlic shed

old farm chair

he let
grub
pick
what
he wanted
to make.
grub's
favorite
are
mangel beets...

grub & mangels

attila
always
brings
them to the
market
for him.

the sun
slowly went down
as people
began to arrive
and
wander
up
and down
the vegetable rows
drinking
cocktails
out of
mason jars.

discussion over onions

that night
after dinner,
as people
gathered
in
the tractor barn
to play music
and sing,
my brother
and i walked
down the road
to a large meadow
at the bottom
of the hill.
the air
was heavy
with the
evening
humidity
and the
frogs
crooned
longingly
as we
stood
together
staring into
the darkness
watching
millions
of
fireflies
blinking
like
the stars
above us.
i felt like
we were
little kids
again.

we got home
very very
late.
bear
was
fast asleep.

Sweet!
Thank you for the link to mangel beets, as I was going to ask.
Now all I need to know is what a mason jar is ;)
And I also note that grub is shucking off that former spooky anonymity.

I wish we'd had evenings like that when we lived in DC! It sounds wonderful. I love being back in the Willamette Valley, but I sure do miss fireflies.
