pola weekend
growing up
the sound
of the radio
was constant
in my home.
i remember
listening
to some drama
on the radio
throughout
the house
while
everyone
in the house
was
seperately
engrossed
in their own
projects.
my mother cooking
in the kitchen
at the top
of the stairs...
the smell
of
onions
permeating
silently into
each room.
my sister
reading
in her room...
the rocking
chair
creeking
back
and forth.
my brother joe
painting
at the foot
of the stairs...
turpentine
creeping
up the stairs
to mingle
with the
onions.
my brother tom
play-acting
some battle...
the occasional
cry of victory
from
a make-believe
audience.
my brother johnny
and i
usually
sitting
on the stairs
playing a game...
whispering
about
some
grandiose
plan.
my
dad in his
office
probably
writing
another
nsf proposal...
the sound
of the
dot matrix printer
on it's
long journey
across the page.
somehow
listening
to the radio
together
made it
seem like
we were all
in
the same room.
this weekend
we stayed in
and listened
to the radio
as
grub prepared
for thanksgiving
and
i cleaned
and
finished
neglected
projects.
hope you
had
a
productive
weekend.

Ah...nice mushroom picture!
loving your polaroids!...x
loved the words about listening to the radio and playing on the stairs- reminded me of my childhood.
most days i wish i could get rid of our tv. i'm a radio/music person, but my husband is a tv person. i guess i just don't understand what he gets out of it...that's okay, though :)
lovely photos.
what a lovely childhood memory!
We never listened to the radio growing up, but I do now in adulthood. npr is a constant on the weekend. I associate weekends with Ira Glass and Lynn Rosetto Casper:)
such a poetic and nostalgic post. I wish I could write. I can almost imagine it all as you wrote it. :)
i love that.
we should listen to the radio at the same time miles away...
i too love the mushroom pic!
xo
Beautiful, poetic post.
Beautiful writing, you bring family closeness and heartwarming scenes to life. Happy thanksgiving!
...the DOT MATRIX' long journey across the page....That is a great line...And boy does that speak to a generation....Thanx for the good times in d.c. by-the-way....
Beautiful images to fall into, and, I, too, grew up in a house in which the radio always played. In our house it was always tuned to Dixieland jazz, a little talkback and all else in between.
see you, g xx
