last days

i grew up
in southern
california.
i lived on
the beach,
wore flip-flops
in autumn,
and
the candles
would often
melt
in the sun
on
the windowsill
at christmas time.

i didn't see
snow until
i was 18,
december 10, 1992...

i didn't
really
experience
autumn
until
i lived in
seattle.
california
autumns
meant that
it was
in the 70s
and we had
to go back
to school
and maybe,
just maybe
we'd get
some rain
{how i use to
love rain!}

. . . . .

but now
autumn
is the
season
i love best.
i am
a
cardigan
and
corduroy-
wearing
kind of gal
and there
are few things
i love more
than walks
on blustery days
as the leaves
rain down
and
the light
is
ever-so
golden.
perfect
for tea,
for knitting
and
for polaroid-
taking.

we are
easing
into fall here.
the days
are still
warm
but the nights
are cool
and
my cat spot
hesitates
at the door,
sniffing,
before
stepping out
onto
the cool stones
of the patio.

grub and i
don't sit
outside
for dinner
anymore
and
the light
seeps away
before
we get home.

hello
autumn,
i missed you.

Here in Southern Finland the autumn as you described it - my favourite time in year - is now almost over. It'll be leafless trees, evenings getting dark sooner and sooner and endless rain until Christmas, I guess. I love those days you can wear a warm cardigan but don't have to wear a coat yet. And the autumn light...
You made me miss September. :)

Your description of the changing seasons was lovely. It made me realise how much I love Autumn too, though it seems like a long way away right now. There's a long hot summer ahead of me first. xo lj

Autumn is such a wonderful season... all leaf piles and crisp air. Enjoy!
Here spring has turned a little too quickly into what feels like summer.
see you, g xo

Hey bugheart! I entered 'entomologist' in the profession field of my profile and I noticed your handle in the list of folks that came up when I clicked the link. How's work coming? Are you planning to be in San Diego in Dec.?

my favorite part about autumn... that blue blue blue cobalt sky, especially with some handy red leaves thrown in. lovely polas!
