derrick ray ... sunday

saturday
my little brother
turned
the big 30.
well,
he's not
really
my little brother
but
we act
like siblings.

i met him
when i lived
in
a vegetarian co-op
in chapel hill.
i am not sure
why he lived there
since he ate meat-
he declared that
he was
a vegetarian
on a meal
by meal basis

so
he'd often
have bbq
in the fridge
when his parents
came to visit.

the veggie coop
aka house of 5
aka ho'5
was me,
deb & maria,
derrick
and some
5th
ever-changing
roommate.

i spent 2.5
wonderful
years
there.

derrick can be
bratty
but in
a little brother
kind of way-
where you want
to
smack him
one minute
but
you forget to
because
he makes you laugh
the next minute.

derrick likes
lists
of why
he is
so fabulous
so here's
my d-ray
top 10:

1. he's damn sharp,
but so much so
that he has
a hard time
getting motivated.
2. he loves fashion
but in a
southern
straight boy
meets
gay boy way-
stylish
tempered
with just
enough butch.
3. he has
great taste
in music...
who else
listens
to
old time
country music
and
kiki and herb
in the same
sitting.
4. he is the
only person
that i know
that can make
crass
academic
5. he's a great
and very
creative cook.
sometimes
he goes a little
far and makes
pumpkin soup
out of a
6 month old
pumpkin.
i never knew
that
pumpkin
can taste
like
watermelon.
6. he teaches
classes on
feminism.
consequently
he knows
more about
vaginas
than
most women
although
he has never
slept with one.
7. look at
the lovely
handmade
apron
he gave me
for my birthday:

8. he lives in iowa
but still
manages
to make
it interesting.
9. he has
the best laugh
and
he laughs
a lot.
10. he loves
tastings
of all things-
tea,
coffee,
wine
so he's the
best person
to whine
to
about
bad dc espresso.

xoxox
to
d-ray
on his
30th
birthday!

sunday
rebecca
and i
had breakfast
again
after
a long hiatus
(too long-
i missed her!)
she looked
fabulous
as usual...

here she
is
looking
tough leaning
on betty blue:

she gave me
sushi socks
for my birthday
too!
so sweet.

hope
you all
had
a wonderful
weekend!

i didn't know you used to live in chapel hill. :) if you come for a visit, we should have high tea. i've been inside the carolina inn for a violin concert but have never had tea there. so glad to hear you had a fun weekend. xo shari

You must have a really special friend to make you an apron that fabulous! I love the colors and the polka dots. And I think that only rebecca can pull off a top like that. Enjoy the holiday week.

Yea - Rebecca can somewhow pull off clothes that I'd look downright silly in, even though we're essentially the same size. But it looks like you're having ice cream and a strawberry milkshake for breakfast. but it was probably yogurt and a smoothie, huh?

D-Ray rocks the city! It was fun being the never-quite-the-5th-HO5'er (cooking and sleeping on the couch qualify for Not-Quite status, right?). I'm glad you had a great birthday. I'm sorry to miss the Belgian beer and cheese party!!
